Guilherme Boulos sees ‘geringonça’ in Portugal as an inspiration for Brazil
“I really like the idea of the ‘gimmick’, especially because it is an agreement with the programmatic bases (…) I think it would be very glad to [positivo] to be able to have this as a reference for the construction of a unity of the programmatic left in Brazil”, said Guilherme Boulos, in an interview with Lusa.
Boulos recalled that the Brazilian political system is different from Portuguese semi-presidentialism. But “the idea of building a programmatic agreement, to define an electoral front is an idea that attracts us a lot and, obviously, we have been talking to the leftist parties”.
Talking about the representativeness of the acronyms of the left, which were weakened in 2018 when they elected a limited number of representatives in Congress and lost as presidential candidates to the far right represented by Bolsonaro, which later also did not have great success in municipal communications disputed in 2020, Boulos believes the scenario is changing.
“The reason [para a possível ascensão das esquerdas] it is precisely the situation that Bolsonaro placed Brazil. a lot of people went with Bolsonaro in 2018, I’m not talking about the political sectors, I’m talking about the people, the people who voted for Bolsonaro, with a certain desire for change and saw what happened. They’re feeling what happened in their skin,” snapped Boulos.
“Brazil is in one of its worst economic moments, inequality is widening, people’s lives are getting worse every day. An agenda of the left, which is an agenda to guarantee rights, which is an agenda to combat social inequalities, today has more echo and more strength than it had two or four years ago”, he concludes.
For a change in the country, Boulos also called for the renewal of the left in the 2022 presidential elections and for a debate on the development model, at a time when former President Lula da Silva seems to be the representative of this ideological sector.
In an interview with Agência Lusa, Guilherme Boulos, one of the most prominent leaders of the Socialism and Freedom Party (Psol), believes that “the left [no Brasil] today has a challenge, which is the challenge to renew itself. Left is challenged to seriously debate another development model other than simply looking back and saying ‘I’ll do it again’. This is not enough”.
One of the new exponents of the Brazilian progressive current, the politician defended the changes, citing, in particular, the environmental debate that has harmed the country’s international image when he was asked about criticisms made against Lula da Silva and some parties associated with the left.
“We’ve been debating this very deeply on the Psol [Partido Socialismo e Liberdade]. The need for a development model that takes into account the reduction of carbon generated, adapting to the IPCC goals [Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudança do Clima] in order to reach zero carbon targets, we are following the COP-26 and all the debates around it very carefully”, highlighted Boulos.
Asked whether he will support Lula da Silva, likely presidential candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT) in 2022 and who leads all polling intentions published in the country, Boulos replied that he would follow his party’s guidelines.
“We don’t do politics alone. I am part of the Psol, I am a leader of the Psol. I am building a collective position within my party. I defend a unity of the progressive camp to defeat Bolsonaro in 2022 and take Brazil out of this nightmare”, design.
“We also want to discuss with Lula [da Silva] which program will be defended. It is not enough just to take the Bolsonaro. We have to defeat the Bolsonaro project, we have to defeat ‘bolsonarism’. We need to defeat a neoliberal economic agenda that is humiliating the Brazilian people, a devastating environmental agenda of the Bolsonaro Government, to defeat what ‘bolsonarism’ represents as a policy of hatred”, he added.
According to the 39-year-old young leader, who intends to run as a candidate for the regional government of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, there is a need for a programmatic debate between his party and the PT and Lula da Silva before declaring support for the former -ruler.
Boulos, who defended Lula da Silva in Portugal in 2018 when he called for an international front in favor of the former president’s release – at the time he was in prison and was accused of corruption in the scope of the Lava Jato operation investigations -, denied declaring personal support in the presidential elections .
“There is no personal support, I don’t have personal support for anyone. I am a political leader who is part of a party and my forms are also guided by the party’s positions”, he affirmed.
