From Torquato Tasso to Led Zeppelin: Lucia Ronchetti’s “Rivale” in San Marino
A plot that takes its cue from the liberated Jerusalem of Tasso and a music inspired by the theory of baroque affections but with quotes that reach up to Led Zeppelin. AND Rival, chamber opera by Lucia Ronchetti which arrives in the film version at the XXIII Autumn Music Festival. Tuesday 19 October (Palazzo SUMS, 9 pm) is scheduled Ia special evening with free admission – finally recovered after the suspension due to the pandemic – which takes its title from the composition presented in absolute preview in 2019 at the Sagra Malatestiana in Rimini with New Music Theater Ensemble of the San Marino International Music Summer Courses.
The clash between Tancredi and Clorinda is one of the toughest scenes in the Liberated Jerusalem. The crusader knight and the Muslim princess fall in love on the battlefield, but decide to continue the duel until death. The work composed by Lucia Ronchetti, commission, takes its cue from the tragic duel between the two loversata of the Staatsoper Inter Den Linden in Berlin (2017): a monodrama for soprano, cello, brass ensemble and metal percussion.
Precisely the inner contrast of the female character, who evokes opponents not present on the scene (rendered only by the music), has pushed the director Giulio Boato to create a dreamlike film work, in which the protagonist Hsiaopei Ku splits herself into several entities, as a prisoner of a matryoshka of dreams.
Winner of two awards at the International Film & Art Festival Buenos Aires 2020, after the presentation at RomaEuropa Festival and Sagra Musicale Malatestiana, “Rivale” is screened for the first time in San Marino.
The happy collaboration between Kublai Film, producer of the film, and the San Marino International Music Summer Courses, made it possible to create a cultural product of the highest level.
The artistic cast is of absolute international value: Giulio Boato (director), Rohan de Saram (solo cello), John Kenny (solo trombone), Rodolfo Rossi (percussion), HsiaoPei K (voice and winner of the “best artist” award), Augusto Ciavatta (director, winner together with Lucia Ronchetti of the “Miglio musica per Film Musicale” award).
