In the fall of 2021, many events will take place in Nizhny Novgorod, united by one theme – Russian culture abroad. Organizers have been announced within the framework of the Russian Berlin festival.
The festival will open with two events. On October 22, in the Science Park of the NNSU “Lobachevsky Lab”, the lecture of the cultural historian Alexander Markov “Russian Berlin: the settlement of expressionism” will end, and on October 23 at the “Arsenal” – a concert of the music of the Bauhaus period “KANDINSKY: YAYA DADA”. 100 years ago Berlin was not only a German, but also a Russian city. Between 1.5 and 2 million people left Russia after the October Revolution. Of these, about 600 thousand emigrants arrived in the Weimar Republic, and about half of them in Berlin.
Why did Germany and Berlin become the attraction of Russian culture, and not France, Turkey or Italy? Why can we talk about a cultural phenomenon called “Russian Berlin”? What preceded the stable stable international relations between Russia and Germany? In world history, there are no other examples when the diaspora outside the borders of their homeland united not only on a national but also on an intellectual basis.
Turning to the topic of “Russian Berlin”, we are trying to solve its riddles. Berlin is destined to play an important role in strengthening Russian national identity, preserving cultural values and reviving the traditions of the early twentieth century after the revolution and civil war. Russia Thousands of Russian representatives of the “first wave” of emigration – writers, artists who found themselves abroad, formed in Berlin a special community, an “island” of Russian civilization in the center of Europe.
The phenomenon of the cultural environment of “Russian Berlin”, with its inherent features characteristic of the intellectual life of pre-revolutionary Russia, was one of the main conditions for the foreign wealth of Russian culture.
