The national anti-usury conference in progress in the city. Caritas: Situation in clear growth with Covid
from Online editing
The usury emergency in full growth in Naples. This is confirmed not only by the data of Caritas, which also estimated a surge in cases in Italy in 2020 due to Covid, but also the words of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi and the bishop, Monsignor Battaglia, who have raised an alarm. During 2020, the structures connected to Caritas listened to 5,065 people and families for problems related to usury. In 663 cases, guarantees were issued with only the funds made available by the State, for an amount equal to 17 million 261,362 euros. Naples is one of the areas where this attention of Caritas has focused more. These are all numbers that emerged during the work of the national anti-usury conference taking place in Naples.
Support actions
The pandemic has aggravated a situation that in our city was already extremely serious – said Mayor Manfredi – in which many without the support of the state have almost been forced to resort to forms of usury often governed by crime. The new first citizen stressed that phenomena such as usury are not only a defeat for the State but also a vulnus citizen in the economic system of the city and therefore not the aid paths must be posed only as an action of social support but also like a mending of a community that leaves no one behind. Hence the need highlighted by Manfredi for actions not only of repression but also of prevention which must certainly be educational and economic prevention to implement initiatives that are a safety belt against infiltrations.
Soul view
The appeal for support to families that got into debt comes from the bishop of Naples, Monsignor Domenico Battaglia. Those who have taken the shortcut of the loan here and immediately set out on the winding and cursed road of the mafia loan that annihilates the soul and cancels the future, has sold their soul to the devil – said the prelate – the fight against usury is a matter of freedom because those who are strangled by debts are not free, those who are forced to suffer infinite times while waiting for the granting of a loan or for the restructuring of a mortgage are not free, just as those who are exhausted spend sleepless nights looking for a solution because they no longer have access to bank credit. Addressing the Foundations, Fr Mimmo defined them as instruments of freedom. Who are active in helping these families. We are all called to dare – added the bishop – because the dignity of the people who raped and disfigured is at stake, their lives are at stake and therefore we need to feel a strong responsibility to think of new paths, to ask ourselves what else can be invented so that they phenomena are constantly evolving and we are all called to always present analyzes.
