Thessaloniki – Halkidiki: Which areas were swept by the bad weather – Where a lot of water fell
The bad weather “Ballos” hit the largest part of the country in a sweeping way. One person went missing, dozens more were endangered and property along with sockets were destroyed. The intense phenomena subside, however the problems remain.
Many are the areas that sank from the unreal amounts of rain that fell in the last 24 hours.
The network of automatic meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr recorded high levels of rain from Thursday 14/10 until the morning of Saturday 16/10.
The largest volume of water fell in Ithaca (460 mm) followed by I.M. Vatopedi on Mount Athos (297 mm) and Angelokastro in Etoloakarnania (262 mm). Heavy rains were also recorded in Athens, where the Patissia station recorded 182 millimeters of rain.

Houses and shops were flooded, residents were endangered, cars were swept away on roads that had been turned into torrents. The disasters in the area of Zagliveri in Langadas, Thessaloniki are huge. The way from the rushing waters was followed by the despair of the inhabitants who made their property within a few minutes.
Four streams that end in Zagliveri swelled and the rushing waters in just ten minutes swept everything in their path. The fury of the water was great. Home appliances have been swept away. They closed the door and lifted from refrigerators to freezers.
Sweeping passage of bad weather in Halkidiki
The nightmare of floods in the summer of 2018 woke up in Nea Vrasna. The stream swelled, causing tons of water to uproot even the foundations of houses. A night of agony for the residents in Olympiada, Halkidiki. Three houses located next to the stream in the area suffered incalculable damage from the rapid waters.
“The houses in the estuary have been flooded. “Unfortunately, we have three houses that engineers must come and see”, stressed the president of the community, Giannis Petrakis.
Unaccountable damages in Etoloakarnania
The village of Kainourgio in Etoloakarnania was buried in mud when Ligorema overflowed. Houses and basements were flooded. Dozens of calls for flooded houses and users were received by the fire service in Agrinio and Kato Tragana.
The mayor of Agrinio, George Papanastasiou, submitted a request for the municipality to hide in a state of emergency, in order, as he states, “to face the problems caused by the intense and phenomena that occurred throughout its territory.” Earlier a settlement was evacuated.
The Municipality of Thermo with leased equipment intervened to deal with the damage in Myrtia, while the Fire Department also contributed significantly.
The biggest problems are located in the roads connecting the communities of Argyro Pigadi, Kokkinovrisi and Koniskas, as in these cases there were also the largest settlements and transports of streams of large quantities of sediments and their accumulation on the roads, without missing the problems and the other roads connecting the communities of Haliki, Drymonas, Amvrakias, Diplatanos and Perkos, while it should be mentioned that after the flood there are still roads cut off due to landslides in Argyro Pigadi (at Gardikioti in the section Drymonas – Argyro and Pigdi) in Kokkinovrisi (location of Sara Kosinas in the section Ampelia – Kokkinovrisi).
Apocalyptic Images in Corfu
Images of Apocalypse were left behind by “Ballos” in Corfu. Residents had to be released with separate machinery, basements and a flood operation and the sea became the road network that suffered incalculable damage.
Ithaca was presented by the Minister of Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, in order to conduct an autopsy after the incalculable catastrophes caused by the bad weather “Ballos”. Mr. Stylianidis met with the heads of local government, agencies, but also residents.
