Guitarist Manuel de Oliveira presents “Entre-Lugar” in Lisbon, Braga and Castelo Branco | Song
It was supposed to be a fully recorded live record, but the pandemic has changed its twists. Between-Place, that happens to Iberia (2002), the Amarte (2005) and the Iberia Live (2015) in the discography of guitarist Manuel de Oliveira, it ended up being recorded in the studio during the first phase of the confinement dictated by the covid-19 pandemic. In a second phase, a series of concerts was prepared whose agenda the pandemic also shuffled. It debuts now in Lisbon, on the stage of Maria Matos Theater (on the 19th, at 9 pm), heading to Braga (Circus Theater, on the 22nd, 9:30 pm) and Castelo Branco (Cinema Theater Avenueon the 23rd, 9:30 pm).
Guitarist, composer, born in Guimarães in 1978, Manuel de Oliveira recorded Between-Place with João Frade (accordion) and Sandra Martins (cello), as well as a lot of sources, among which the fado singer Marco Rodrigues, who also participates now in the concerts that finally take place. The record, as Manuel de Oliveira told PÚBLICO at the time of its release, is a summary of the influences he has had since he first picked up a guitar, at age 7, working with other musicians (Hélder Moutinho, António Chainho, Dulce Pontes, Janita Salomé and Vitorino, among others), for a trio he formed with two of Paço de Lucía’s musicians, Jorge Pardo (winds) and Carles Benavent (bass) and for the conception and production of the official opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture 2012 in his homeland.
With a total of eight songs, the first five are a kind of development of the album’s title and what gives rise to it (streak, neia, north wind, Between-Place, South wind), while the last three all have a dedication: the breath, the only song with lyrics and sung on the record by Marco Rodrigues, is dedicated to Manuel de Oliveira and his father and also master, guitarist Aprígio Oliveira; five more come is an instrumental version of the famous theme by José Afonso (1929-1987) that pays homage to its author; and finally, magnetic paths is a tribute to Paco de Lucía (1947-2014).
With Manuel de Oliveira (guitar, braguesa and percussion), best concerts, in addition to the fado singer Marco Rodrigues (vocals), musicians João Frade (accordion and percussion), Sandra Martins (cello and percussion) and José Silva (Zecas) (acoustic bass) ).
