Omroep Flevoland – News – Almere has the most transparent gift register in the Netherlands
Almere was declared the municipality with the most transparent donations register on Thursday evening. The municipality receives a prize for this from the Dutch department of Transparency International, an organization that is committed to a world without an organization.
According to the organization, Almere deserves this award because the municipality keeps a good record of what gifts administrators and politicians receive during their work. Clear rules have also been drawn up about what can and cannot be accepted as a gift.
Drivers get regular gifts during their work. That could be a book or a bottle of wine. But in some cases, expensive gifts are offered, such as an extensive dinner or a holiday trip abroad. When the gifts can be captured, everyone can see which gifts are involved. That way it becomes conditions bribery and bconflict of interests to fight.
Vice-chairman Willem Boutkan of the municipality of Almere received the award from Lousewies van der Laan of Transperency International. According to Van der Laan, four municipalities in each province in the Netherlands were investigated. “It turned out that unfortunately many municipalities do not yet have a register at all. In Almere it is very clear. Everyone knows what the rules are. That register is also filled in really well. So really an example for other municipalities.”
