Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland will host the European Championships in 2025-Dagsavisen
This is stated by Denmark’s football president Jesper Møller, according to the news agency Ritzau.
– We have decided to bid on the European Championships for women in 2025. The four Nordic countries Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland with support from the Faroe Islands and Iceland, says Møller.
Denmark has previously investigated opportunities to hold the championship alone, but the growth of women’s football and the demand for the European Championship arena has made the plan unrealistic.
– The assessment has been how we can come up with the strongest possible bid, so that we get and playoffs in the Nordics. Then we have to cooperate with the other Nordic countries, says the Danish football president.
Four years of work
Football president Terje Svendsen says that the associations have worked together on the theme for four years, and that he is sure that the Nordic countries can arrange a great championship.
“The Nordic federations are committed to delivering a high-quality championship that promotes gender equality values, development, strengthens participation and creates and lasting effect in both the Nordic region and throughout Europe,” is a press release from the Norwegian Football Association.
At the same time, NFF’s general secretary Pål Bjerketvedt says that they are currently at a very early stage in the application process.
– In the first instance, it is a decision to register interests. And then the application deadline is a little later this fall. We believe that it is realistic to look into 2025, he says VG.
Elected next year
The European Championship host for 2025 will be appointed in December next year. Poland has also signed up for the championship.
Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have both qualified for next year’s European Championships in England.
Previously, the Nordic countries have looked at the possibility of becoming World Cup hosts in 2027, but that plan has been shelved, according to Møller.
However, NFF informs on “The Nordic football presidents will wait for further information regarding the application process” for the World Cup in six years.
