STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) – A player on Sweden’s national football team for 21 years has claimed that he was racistly beaten by an opponent in a European Championship qualifier against Italy.
Anthony Elanga, a striker who plays for Manchester United, said that he was subjected to a racist comment in Tuesday’s match in Monza, the Swedish Football Association said on Wednesday.
“We have told about our version of what happened and have sent an oral report to both the referees and the match’s delegates,” says Claes Eriksson, coach of Sweden’s under-21 team. “Now we are waiting for feedback through the match report and the referee report.
“Once they arrive, we will decide how to proceed.”
Sweden made an equalizer in the stoppage time in the second half in a 1-1 draw.
– No one should have to be exposed to racism, it is completely unacceptable, says Eriksson. “We all stand behind and support Anthony in this.”
The 19-year-old Elanga has played a match for United this season, as a replacement in a 1-0 loss to West Ham in the English League Cup.
