The cyclists and “bike-tafeurs” of Caen (Calvados) know the Napoleon route well. This 2,700-meter-long cycle path, whose official name is ” Napoleon 1st walk“, Takes the route of the old Caen-Courseulles railway line, between the Zénith roundabout and the rue de Bayeux. It constitutes a privileged route to avoid the big boulevards, by bicycle.
Stone fall protection fence
Carved into the limestone, it is bordered by rock faces. In places, these have become unstable with time, and rockfall. “This will endanger pedestrians and cyclists,” notes the City of Caen.
From Monday, October 18, 2021, and until November 12, security work will be carried out, over a length of 65 meters. The work site is located at the level of the bridge on rue Caponière and consists of the purging of unstable blocks and the installation of a “fall protection fence” against the parishioners. The municipal decree specifies:
Pedestrian and cyclist traffic is prohibited during Napoleon 1st, in its part between the Zénith roundabout and the pedestrian / cycle lane connecting to rue Hardouin-Mandard (Editor’s note: Haie-Vigné sector).
A deviation set up
A detour will be set up via the streets of Maltot, Bretteville, Caponière (traversée), de la Haie-Vigné and Hardouin-Mansard.
Similar work had already taken place in 2019 and 2020, on other portions of the track.
