Returning to Real Madrid in the last quarter after a missed start to the match, Monaco was unable to seek victory on Spanish soil and fell narrowly (94-86).
Monaco failed to follow in ASVEL’s footsteps. While the Villeurbanne overthrew the Anadolu Efes Istanbul, tenant of the title on Tuesday, the Principality’s players believed they could experience the same scenario on the Real Madrid floor but gave in at the very end of the match. Because the “Roca Team” completely missed the start of the match. For almost five minutes, the Principality’s players had only one free throw from Donatas Motiejunas (9 points) to chew on. For their part, the Madrilenians did not wait and Guerschon Yabusele (18 points) had a great time to give a twelve point advantage at first. If Monaco responded with five consecutive points from Danilo Andjusic (8 points), the club of the Rock once again drank the cup, conceding a 14-0 which allowed Real Madrid to exceed the bar of 20 points in advance in the first quarter. The ten minutes leading up to half-time saw the Monegasques turn their backs but, once behind by 25 points, we saw the start of a revolt. Defensively, the “Roca Team” tightened the game with only seven points conceded in the last five minutes of the second quarter.
Monaco believed it to the end
Offensively, the ASM found solutions with Mike James (24 points, 10 assists). Finishing on a 13-2, Monaco found its locker room with only twelve points behind. The break did not dampen Monegasque enthusiasm, on the contrary. As soon as they returned to the floor of the Wizink Center, Monaco deployed their game to quickly return to below the ten-point mark. If Real Madrid then tried to react with Fabien Causeur (12 points) and Thomas Heurtel points), the Merengue (13 points have progressed the last quarter with a lead of seven points. Once again led by twelve points, the Monegasques then put on the warmer blue and, signing a 14-2, they were able to equalize three minutes from time through Will Thomas (11 points) … but without succeeding to take advantage on the scoreboard. Feeling that defeat was not inevitable, the Madrilenians raised the tone to stand out again thanks to a 9-1 and go for a victory that they would no doubt have thought great at one point in the meeting but which is only eight points (94-86) . Monaco thus conceded their first defeat of the season in the Euroleague when Real Madrid moved forward.
