The Chestnut Man tops the Netflix list in Norway-NRK Culture and Entertainment
A small figure of the cast can not provide a challenge to mention the Netflix series «Squid Game», which has a top list on the Netflix page where he came out.
The Danish series “Kastanjemannen” has climbed up the lists on Netflix in Norway, and now the top position is within reach. It is also a good international, in the UK it has the largest amount of range.
We are in Copenhagen in modern times. A serial killer is loose, and in the crime scenes small “chestnut men” are left behind – small first-person-like figures made of twigs and chestnut nuts.
– It is our incredible fun to make a story in Denmark that comes out so widely. I’m really proud of the series, and really happy to have made it, says director Mikkel Serup.

Inspired by Danish children’s play
The series is based on Søren Sveistrup’s book of the same name, which was published in 2018. The inspiration for the book came after an eerie experience when he picked up his daughter in kindergarten.
– I saw all the small, innocent children who sat and made chestnut men. Sat with awl and drill in dei and the song song which is also in the chestnut man. It was creepy in a Twilight Zone-like way. These are children with an innocent, naive universe.
Chestnut men are something many Danish children have made during their upbringing, and it is inspired by this play and song that the idea for “The Chestnut Man” was born.
Sveistrup is not entirely unknown to the crime world, he has previously been involved in making the Danish series “The Crime”.
Nordic character
The series falls within the genre «Nordic noir», which is characterized by dark landscapes, which create a gloomy atmosphere. When it comes to handling, it is often written for a political point of view and set in Scandinavia or the Nordic countries.
Well-known series such as “The Crime” and “The Bridge” fall within this genre, which reached its height in international attention a few years ago, according to media expert Gry Cecilie Rustad.
Series director Mikkel Serup still thinks “Kastanjemannen” has a distinctive character.
– It has probably happened very interesting things in terms of finding a warmth in the colors. It is significantly different from the Nordic noir you know, but you will still be able to recognize elements that are Nordic / Scandinavian.
Can open doors
When the series is now on the top lists in both Norway and the UK, it could lead to further investment in Nordic crime, according to film and series reporter in NRK, Sigurd Vik. This makes a special page Netflix is behind the series.
– Netflix is big in terms of numbers and commercial success. It can have a lot to say about Netflix’s experiences on “Kastanjemannen” is a way forward for what they want to invest in of Nordic films and series, says Vik.
If he experienced great success, the series has the potential to become a door opener in terms of what type of productions it will be invested in further, according to Vik.
