Since the end of September, compost bins have been popping up in the streets of the 7th arrondissement. A strategy of the Metropolis which has given itself 5 years to reduce by 50% the volume of waste that goes to the incinerator.
You may have seen them, but you haven’t. 150 composters – or compost terminals – are gradually being installed throughout the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. A bit like the glass dumpsters, several terminals comb the district, from the Rhône, to the Boulevard des Tchécoslovaques. The goal by 2026: to achieve a food waste bin for 550 inhabitants.
With collection once or twice a week, the main challenge for the city is to reduce the amount of waste produced by 25% and to reduce the volume of waste that is part of the incinerator by 50%. Residents must be given 7 liters of water to start and kraft bags. Then, the inhabitants throw the rest of their meal in these bags before bringing them in the composters, “protected from rats and small animals” specifies the Greater Lyon in the magazine of the Metropolis.
On its website, Greater Lyon has set up a interactive map which lists the compost stations in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. The town hall of the 7th arrondissement of Lyon has indicated that these same types of terminals will be deployed in Jean Macé then Gerland from the end of October.
An action that is part of a broader strategy already started in July 2021: the Metropolis had distributed 20,000 individual composters free of charge to people with a garden.
