BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – A good two weeks after the election to the Berlin House of Representatives, the announced explorations began on Monday in a three-way format – and that with a marathon session. The negotiators from the SPD, Greens and FDP talked about seven and a half hours about the possibility of forming a government. In the run-up to the event, there was talk of a future duration of around five hours. A meeting of the SPD, the Greens and the Left will follow on Tuesday – the three parties have been ruling together since 2016.
According to the SPD regional office, nothing is said about the togetherness and reference is made to the agreed confidentiality. The SPD state chairman and mayor-designate Franziska Giffey only spoke of “good talks”, while the top candidate for the Green Party, Bettina Jarasch, of “extremely intensive talks”. FDP representatives held back with such assessments.
Last Friday, Giffey announced that her party would continue exploring the two three-way formats after numerous bilateral talks. At the same time, she had made it clear that she had a preference for a traffic light coalition with the Greens and the FDP. The Greens, on the other hand, are in favor of a continuation of the previous three-party coalition with the SPD and the Left.
In front of the location of the explorations, the SPD regional office in the Wedding district, 100 representatives of the “Deutsche Wohnen & Co expropriate” initiative demonstrated on Monday for social rent policy and for the rapid implementation of the result of the referendum. On September 26, parallel to the election of the Bundestag and MPs, a good 56 percent of voters in Berlin voted for the expropriation of housing groups with more than 3,000 apartments.
After the election to the Berlin House of Representatives on September 26, the SPD, Greens, CDU, Left and FDP first explored commonalities and differences in terms of a possible coalition in two-party formats. After all, a whole series of three-party alliances are mathematically possible. However, the CDU is out for the time being, the SPD and the Greens are considered set for a new coalition. It is open who comes as a third partner.
Giffey had announced that he would complete the explorations by mid-October and then begin the coalition negotiations. That means, the parties only have this week for the preliminary talks./kr/ppz/ah/DP/he
