[12.10.2021] The State of Berlin and the Vattenfall Eurofiber joint venture have signed a letter of intent to expand the fiber optic network in Berlin. More than 500,000 Berlin households and companies are to be connected to a high-performance fiber optic network by 2026.
The Vattenfall Eurofiber joint venture and the State of Berlin have signed a joint letter of intent and are therefore partners in the Berlin gigabit strategy. The Vattenfall Eurofiber joint venture was founded in 2020 specifically for fiber optic expansion in Berlin. Make investments in the millions and connect more than 500,000 Berlin households and companies to the high-performance fiber optic network by the end of 2026. As part of accompanying measures, the State of Berlin will support the self-commercial expansion of Vattenfall Eurofiber, thereby enabling rapid and efficient expansion. This is the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and Vattenfall in similar messages. Vattenfall Eurofiber will use existing district heating ducts for the expansion. Such a “minimally invasive intervention” keeps the loads caused by civil engineering work as low as possible. The resulting high-performance fiber optic network should be available to all Internet providers without discrimination via Open Access. Modern fiber optics are considered to be faster, safer and more energy-efficient than the existing coaxial or copper cables and meet all the requirements of a modern digital infrastructure, according to Vattenfall. The network will also be a digital infrastructure for 5G and IoT connectivity and pave the way for Berlin’s development into a smart city. The fiber optic expansion has already started in the Berlin district of Spandau. (Speed)
