Portugal has a perfect record in welcoming Luxembourg – DNOTICIAS.PT
The Portuguese football team has a perfect record in welcoming Luxembourg, with eight triumphs in eight games, 29 goals scored and none suffered, on the eve of the ninth match, qualifying for the Mundial2022.
On Portuguese soil, Portugal scored a single tangential victory (1-0), a triumph by 2-0, three by 3-0 and many other routs, one by 5-0 and two by 6-0, the most recent at the Estádio Algarve, which will host Tuesday’s meeting.
Pauleta and Simão, both with an ‘bis’, stood out in this match, played on September 3, 2005, counting for the qualification for the 2006 World Cup.
This triumph repeated the biggest Portuguese rout against the Luxembourgers, the 6-0 of March 19, 1961, in the failed race for the 1962 World Cup, in a clash in which the Portuguese ‘star’ was Yaúca, when he achieved a ‘hat’ -trick’.
The other home rout came on August 10, 2011, the day when, in a private, Portugal won 5-0, also at Estádio Algarve, with goals from Hélder Postiga, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fábio Coentrão and Hugo Almeida, the latter in dose pair.
In the last two home games, a Portuguese team finished 3-0, first in 2013, in Coimbra, with goals from Silvestre Varela, Nani and Postiga, and, more recently, in 2019, with goals from Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo and Gonçalo Guedes, in Alvalade, in qualifying for Mundial2014 and Euro2020, respectively.
In 2004, in preparation for the European Championship that Portugal organized, Portugal also won by the same result, then in Águeda, in a result materialized by Figo, Nuno Gomes and Rui Costa, the latter elected in the last hours as president of Benfica.
The most balanced home games, in terms of result, took place in 1988, with a 1-0 tangential, sealed by Fernando Gomes, and in 1986, in a 2-0 triumph, with a new goal by the ‘bi-Bota de Ouro’, after Frederick inaugurated the marker.
The perfection of Portugal in home matches is not extended to all 18 clashes with Luxembourg, as, in another stronghold, the ‘quinas’ team conceded an equalizer and lost once, curiously in the debut of ‘king’ Eusébio.
On October 8, 1961, in Luxembourg City, the ‘home’ of the formation of the Grand Duchy, Eusébio, launched by coach Fernando Peyroteo, and even, but Portugal lost 4-2, on March 19, 1961, blame of a ‘hat-trick’ by Ady Schmidt.
The other match that didn’t win happened on October 12, 1991, on Tuesday exactly three decades ago: it ended with a draw to one result, with the Portuguese goal belonging to rookie António Nogueira.
If the defeat went down in history as the game in which Eusébio made his debut, this one entered the ‘legend’ as the clash – the 298th in Portugal – in which the also ‘Bola de Ouro’ Figo and João Vieira Pinto fulfilled the his first ‘AA’ cap.
Emílio Peixe, who had been named the best player at the 1991 World Youth Championship, won by the Portuguese national team in Lisbon, also made his debut, in the game that preceded the 1-0 defeat in Holland, four days later, which took Portugal out of Euro92.
In the game, already qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, Portugal was losing, but ended up winning in Luxembourg by 3-1, with goals from Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo and Palhinha.
In total, a Portuguese team has 16 wins, one draw and one defeat, with 54 goals scored and eight conceded, in 18 games.
