Salzwelten Salzburg on the Dürrnberg officially opened
08/10/2021
Hallein (OTS) – In the presence of Governor Deputy Dr. Christian Stöckl, Mayor Alexander Stangassinger, Vicar General Mag. Roland Rasser, CEO of Salinen Austria AG Dr. Hannes Androsch and numerous guests of honor officially opened the Salzwelten Salzburg with a ceremony on October 8th.
Salt, the essence of life
Over 40 million euros have been invested in the Dürrnberg in recent years. The entire offer includes the completely redesigned show mine, the original Celtic village, which has grown into the “Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg” in the course of modernization, and the only salt factory in Austria to date, the salt factory. These three authentic attractions together make for an educational and entertaining excursion for young and old. In these not only economically difficult times, this large investment is a clear commitment to the location in Hallein. Around 50 people are employed there in mining and in the salt mine. We are particularly pleased that the old saltworks tradition on the Dürrnberg is being revived by the salt factory, says Dr. Androsch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Salinen Austria AG.
In the Salzwelten Salzburg, the entire cycle of the vital mineral is shown: from the formation of the deposit to modern and historical mining to the salt production directly on the site, its use and return to nature.
Show mine – salt history retold
Salt has been mined on the Dürrnberg for over 2,600 years. The associated settlement on the Dürrnberg was of supraregional importance, while Salzburg was still a sleepy fishing village. In the course of the new production, the Celtic era was selected as one of four epochs and brought closer to the guests. Another milestone on the Dürrnberg was the invention of “wet mining” in the Middle Ages. Chambers in the mountain are filled with fresh water, the water dissolves the salt from the rock. This is how the brine is created, which at that time was scooped out and channeled through wooden gutters to the saltworks in Hallein. This process is brought closer to the guests with the most modern means in a special exhibition. In the Baroque period, this process was refined into what are known as “indulgences”. The brine no longer had to be scooped up, but was drained into the horizon below. This resulted in an enormous increase in efficiency, which brought the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg enormous profits. The baroque splendor of the city of Salzburg still testifies to this wealth today. This era is conveyed to the guests of the Salzwelten Salzburg through an unforgettable raft trip across the underground salt lake. In Austria, around 1.2 million tons of salt are mined annually by Salinen Austria AG. This modern salt mining in Altaussee, Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, but also Hallein, occupies a central place in the new production.
These four epochs, which were short for the federal state of Salzburg, were interwoven with the latest exhibition technology to create an overall experience. Thanks to the miner’s slides and the ride on the mine train, the visit ensures lasting memories.
“Celts.Erlebnis.Berg”
It forms the heart of the above-ground offer. There you will find the true-to-original Celtic village including a salt factory. The accessible huts have been modernized scientifically. The newly designed information center at the “Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg” shows the exciting history of the settlement on the Dürrnberg, including an exact model of the tunnel, in fast motion.
With the new AR researcher APP, in addition to the physical exhibits, everyone can playfully experience the working world of the Celts. Like a scavenger hunt, small tasks can be solved on your own smartphone. Interesting facts about the Celts on the Dürrnberg are conveyed in an entertaining way. This researcher APP is integrated into a modern destination guide. A themed playground for children rounds off the offer.
Hallein again, the saltworks city – the salt manufactory
In Austria’s only show saline, the high-quality gourmet salt BAD ISCHLER Salzzart from Salinen Austria AG is made from natural brine from Dürrnberg. Although industrial operations were stopped in 1989, the purest brine continues to flow directly from the ancient tunnels. Due to the gentle leaching in the mountain, the complex production and the low yield, this pan salt is an exclusive gourmet product. Only on the Dürrnberg can guests watch the pyramid-shaped salt crystals grow and ask the pan master their questions. The Salzwelten Salzburg offer a harmonious experience for local families and international guests. We have worked with executing agencies and architects and offer an experience that can compete internationally, says Kurt Reiter, Managing Director of Salzwelten GmbH.
