Two matches, two victories: Monaco and Villeurbanne, the French clubs involved in the Euroleague, confirmed their good start on the continental front on Friday by winning respectively in Kazan (88-80 AD) and Berlin (71-67).
Kazan has done decidedly well in Monaco. The Principality’s club won another victory over the Russian club, which it had already had in the Eurocup final, second European level, last season.
The “Roca Team” is thus gaining ground after its flawless entry into the competition ahead of Panathinaikos last week.
In Kazan, the Monegasques were scared but managed to equalize at the end of the last quarter thanks to a free throw from Mike James, their major recruit. The former Brooklyn Nets point guard could have given his team the victory in regulation time but he missed his second shot.
James, despite a lack of overall skill (14 pts with 6 successful shots for 16 attempts), managed 4 points for his team in overtime. Paris Lee, author of an award-winning basket in overtime (3 to 100% in total in the match), also allowed the “Roca Team” to widen the gap. Donta Hall curled the double-double (16 pts, 8 rebounds).
For his part, Villeurbanne provided the essentials against Alba Berlin, despite a comeback from the German club, insufficient, at the end of the game. Asvel thus continues a new success after its first successful match last week against Zalgiris Kaunas.
In the absence of several important players (Morgan, Lighty, Diot, Wembanyama), the double reigning French champion was able to count on Chris Jones (24 pts) and Elie Okobo (13 pts).
Also undefeated in Elite, Villeurbanne has a perfect record of four successes in as many matches in all competitions.
