“Extinction Rebellion” with, for the time being, the last day of action in Zurich
“Extinction Rebellion” will carry out an action in Zurich for the last time on (today) Friday. Since the start of the actions on Monday, 170 activists have been arrested, “Extinction Rebellion” wrote in the night.
The movement had grown through the week of action, the message said. After Friday’s action, Extinction Rebellion will take a break. After that, a new phase of mobilization begins, “to remedy the situation,” wrote the group. The climate protectors are sticking to their demands on the Federal Council.
The state government should “officially recognize and communicate the existential threat posed by the ecological crisis and its causes”. Greenhouse gas emissions in Switzerland must fall to net zero by 2025. And citizens’ assemblies to work out measures against the ecological catastrophe and for climate justice.
Activists blocked streets in Zurich on Monday and Tuesday. Another blockade failed on Wednesday because the police stopped the activists in the hall of Zurich’s main train station.
On Thursday, four activists from “Extinction Rebellion” blocked another street. However, the four women were carried away by the police and the blockade dissolved after a few minutes.
On Thursday morning, “Extinction Rebellion” announced that they had run out of material. In the past three days, the Zurich City Police have confiscated most of their banners and also confiscated the wooden scaffolding for road blockades. (sda)
