The European Commission (EC) has received a letter from the Minister of the Interior of 12 Member States of the Union requesting an amendment to the Schengen Borders Code and authorizing the installation of physical barriers at the Community’s external borders. This was announced at a press conference in Brussels by Eric Mamer.
“Yes, we have received such a letter and we will respond to it,” he said.
On October 7, he sent an appeal to the European Commission from the heads of the interior ministries in Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia.

It includes that the low Schengen ratio “does not provide for physical enclosure”, but does not build “an effective measure to protect borders, serve the interests of the whole European Union”. The authority of the letter considers that “this justified step must receive additional adequate funding from the EU budget as a priority”.
The interior minister also added that “no third country should be able to use the European asylum system to manage and withdraw political pressure within EU standards”.
