“Seventh Symphony”: a large-scale historical drama on the TV channel “Russia” “tvtomsk.ru
In the new season on the TV channel “Russia” Tomsk citizens will be able to see the premiere of the film “The Seventh Symphony”. The multi-part historical drama directed by Alexander Kott tells about the legendary performance of the Seventh Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich in besieged Leningrad in the summer of 1942.
The radio broadcast of the concert from the overcrowded hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic became both a musical symbol of the blockade of Leningrad and a strong emotional shock that gave hope and strengthened the spirit of the people.
This event was preceded by a huge, hard work. When the country’s leadership decided that Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony should be performed in the besieged city, in July a special plane from Kuibyshev, where the composer was evacuated, delivered the score.
Karl Eliasberg, chief conductor of the Leningrad Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, was instructed to assemble the orchestra and begin rehearsals. However, there were practically no people able to play this complex piece in Leningrad: someone died of hunger in the city, someone was fighting in the war and at the front, and someone else continued to fight on the front line.
