Cologne (dpa) – The mountaineer Reinhold Messner received the 25,000 euro “Global Compact Award” from the TÜV Rheinland Foundation for his life’s work in Cologne today. The 77-year-old South Tyrolean has long been committed to the sustainable use of natural spaces and mountain peoples, according to the jury’s statement. With this Messner embodied “the reverence for creation” and the human task to preserve and protect the dying earth.
With the award, which has been awarded since 2008, the TÜV Rheinland Foundation honors personalities every three years who support the goals of the United Nations (UN) “Global Compact” with their work. The award is being presented for the fifth time. Previous winners included the Kenyan journalist and sociologist Auma Obama and the former chairwoman of Transparency International Germany, Edda Müller.
