Monaco data stored in Luxembourg
The Principality of Monaco has launched its own sovereign cloud (cloud computing) service, intended to address growing concerns about the location of data, she said on Thursday. The first Monaco Cloud server – majority owned by the government of Monaco – was started “last week” by Albert II of Monaco, Frédéric Genta, interministerial delegate in charge of the digital transition, told AFP.
It processes government data, and also targets business customers, whether Monegasque or not. The new player relies initially on two data centers in the principality, and a backup data center in Luxembourg, which benefits from extra-territoriality, said Mr. Genta. A third data center will be built in Monaco.
At the beginning of September, Xavier Bettel and Jean Asselborn had indicated that Luxembourg and Monaco had signed an agreement to this effect on July 15. And to insist on the fact that this agreement “was part of the government strategy called ‘Digital Lëtzebuerg’ which aims to make Luxembourg a European or even global center of trust, at a time when Europe is worried. the growing dependence of businesses and institutions on large US cloud providers, as data processing is taking a strategic place in the economy.
