Mobile care services hardly accept any new senior citizens who need care at home, especially in the central area of Salzburg. The staff is not available for this, say Diakonie and Salzburg relief organization. The shortage of nursing staff is also becoming increasingly evident in the retirement homes.
The personnel situation in many retirement homes is dreary. Because there are not enough nursing staff when & home places are left empty. This applies to homes in the city of Salzburg as well as in some rural communities, according to the union of the Salzburg relief organization.

Because of the shortage of nursing staff, mobile emergency services cannot look after additional senior citizens, says Hermann Hagleitner, managing director of the Salzburg relief organization: “At the moment, those interested only have a chance in the central area of Salzburg if another customer no longer needs our help.” Hermann Hagleitner estimates that the other Salzburg districts are a little better, but capacities are currently exhausted due to the high demand.
The Diakoniewerk has observed something similar. Desperate families would call through all the emergency services to get nurses. Most of the time, the efforts are in vain.
Difficult search for nurses
The staff shortage has been getting worse for years, says Michael König, the managing director of the Diakoniewerk: “When you talk to your colleagues, you hear the same thing everywhere. When employees retire or change, there are hardly any more applications. ”It is difficult to fill the positions.
The coronavirus pandemic with the many additional burdens for the situation of even more difficult nursing staff. Some would therefore have to change the industry, confirm aid and diakonia.
