Explosives specialists on site – Suspicious package paralyzed Geneva city center
Updated
A police operation took place near the Pont du Mont-Blanc in Geneva on Thursday evening. The police cordoned off the area around the bridge in the city center. At 10:15 p.m., the emergency services gave the all-clear.
The Geneva canton police were alerted on Thursday at around 7.30 p.m. because of an abandoned package on the Quai des Bergues. As is customary in such cases, explosives specialists were called in “to dispel doubts and to destroy the package,” repeated Joana Matta, spokeswoman for the cantonal police.
“I’ve seen a lot of emergency vehicles: the fire brigade, the police, ambulance,” said a passer-by to 20minutes. Various roads on the right bank of Lake Geneva have been blocked. The traffic around the Pont du Mont-Blanc was severely impaired, as the “Tribune de Genève” reported.
In a tweet around 8:30 p.m., the police announced the closure of several streets in the city center. The Pont du Mont-Blanc and the Rue du Mont-Blanc as well as the Pont de Bergues and the Rue de Chantepoulet were closed to traffic.
The suspicious item was neutralized around 10:15 p.m. The police said they would open the traffic until 11.30 p.m.
