Pisa and its province bear the brunt of the first autumn start. ICU admissions halved compared to a year ago, 60% fewer positives. Statistics and newspaper headlines help us with the current situation problems with that months ago when the multiply.
October 2020: invaded by Covid. Italy enters the second wave of the pandemic but, essentially, this is the first real test for our area. The troubles are announced, with all their load of fear and pain, already in September. The city reaches the data of October 7 with seven weeks of exponential increase in the spread of the virus behind it. If in August 2020, in fact, Covid had almost disappeared in our latitudes, the ninth month of the year brings with it a rapid rise in the contagion. Leafing through the newspapers, one senses the growing burden of anxiety. On 4 October 2020, the Nation of Pisa titled: “Contagions, it’s the worst week ever. Never so bad: not even in March. It’s the school effect”. On the same edition, a reportage listed a series of classes and institutes closed by the authorities. Not even the University could be spared: “You are also infected with the University. One department closed”. On 5 October, the Pisan Public Assistance raises the alarm: “Building outdoor tensile structures. It will be difficult months, there will be no alternatives”. On 6 October, there was already talk of lockdown so much that both Confesercenti and Confcommercio thundered from our columns: “Bars and restaurants: we don’t want a curfew”. The situation is serious: on 2 October, in the Municipality of Pisa alone, 36 new positives are identified. The sum of the infections – considering the time span between 30 September and 6 October – rises to 288 new cases per week, 41.1 per day. On 7 October, the Nation of Pisa headed again: “Outbreaks and chaos in schools”. It is the prelude to a disastrous second half of October and a dramatic November.
And today? Thinking that the virus is beaten is a mistake, however the premises appear different. There are 19 cases identified yesterday between Pisa and the province. On Tuesday there was even an encouraging “zero” between Valdera and Valdicecina. Furthermore, we arrive at this juncture of the year with six weeks of steady decrease. From the week of August 15th (peak in the fourth wave area) to today, the statistics have always been improving.
And the hospitals? Basically the number of hospitalized is the same as last year (21 people on average), however there is a substantial difference: twelve months ago in intensive care they had 8.57 beds occupied. Today they are 3.57, or less than half. As if to say: it is impossible to predict the future, but at least the conditions for the autumn are at least different.
