How did your passion for sports iron bras come about?
In addition to street workout (sporting leisure combining gymnastics and bodybuilding, Editor’s note), I was registered in a gym. I observed a member who was training. Then I got interested. He showed me the practice and then explained the basics. He encouraged me to compete. Quickly, I got results. I followed. I have been practicing for 5 years.
Where do you train?
In the Toulouse Armwrestling Club, located in Vilatte, near Toulouse. I am there several times a week. With the 20 other members. We all bring each other. Everyone has their strengths. We all pull each other up.
Your club is also ranked 3rd in France …
Each has different titles. This means that we are ranked 3rd out of the 20 clubs in France. It takes a lot of effort. We hope one day to be able to prance in the first place.
Recently, you were crowned French right-arm champion for the second time and vice-champion of France left arm in your category. Do these titles give rise to new ambitions?
I had already, in 2019, won the title of champion of France in – 70 kg. In 2021, it is -75 kg. It is an immense pride. This title echoes the long hours of training. Obviously, we hope to get new ones. The next international matches against the Italians are a new challenge. The best athletes from our two countries will compete and, again, I will give my all. This is the first time that an event of this magnitude has been organized.
In a little over a month you will be flying to Romania with the objective of becoming the world champion …
We will have to work hard. Nothing is won. The standard is very high. For a little over a week (from November 23 to December 3), we will have to stay the course. I will continue to work for a few weeks left before my first world championships. We will represent the city in the best possible way.
Do you think that certain clichés stick to the skin of your discipline?
In the collective imagination, when we talk about arm wrestling, we think of two friends indulging in this sport on a classic table. The reality is, it’s a sport that shouldn’t be taken lightly. And it is high time to demystify it. It must be practiced on a standardized arm wrestling table. This reduces the risk of injury. Injuries are very rare. It happens, but it’s a well-supervised sport that requires good preparation. Also, for many, it’s a sport you have to push when in reality you have to shoot. All the muscles are needed to win. Technique is essential. It is up to us to promote the sport which, I hope, could well make its debut at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
