Toulouse: a library well known to students is closed because its dome is falling apart
The Toulouse study and heritage library, located rue de Périgord near Place Saint-Sernin, has been closed for several days, and for an indefinite period. Indeed, pieces of its dome, which tower 14 m high over the main hall, fell into the hall, without causing any injuries.
Hard blow for the students, looking for a place to study. The study and heritage library has been closed for several days. And we do not know the date of its reopening.
It is the dome of this building, inaugurated in 1935 and listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1994, which is in question.
The town hall of Toulouse indicated, this Wednesday, October 6: “Following material falls from the dome of the Study and Heritage Library, and after a first observation, a detailed inspection of the interior facing of the dome will be as soon as possible, via a suitable platform (presence of a parquet floor) or a scaffolding tower. A technical study office will intervene for an inspection and a diagnosis. “
“The reopening of the library is not immediately possible, for the sake of the safety of users and staff. Everything will be done to allow a reopening as soon as possible “, further indicates the town hall.
In addition to the first security work allowing the reopening, “a more in-depth study will have to be carried out by a heritage architect for this remarkable building listed in the Historic Monuments”.
The Study and Heritage Library records around 300,000 entries per year. It provides 250,000 books from 1900 to today, over 6,000 newspaper titles, as well as a remarkable collection of 150,000 old, rare or precious books.
