The President of Germany addressed the events dedicated to the anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy
German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he should be present today at events to mark the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy. According to him, in the memory of the Germans, who spread the Holocaust, which took place in Ukraine, have no location.
“… In Kyiv, Odesa, Berdychiv, Chernivtsi, Mizocha and many other places. Who in my country, Germany, knows about this Holocaust today? Who knows these blood-soaked names? All these places do not have a proper place in our memories. Ukraine on our memory card remains very close, too schematically depicted. That’s why I have a lot to be today, “Steinmeier stressed.
Steinmeier began his promotion by quoting a poem Yevhen Yevtushenko “Babyn Yar“.
“For a German, for the Federal President of Germany, the way here to Babyn Yar is important, but at the same time I am grateful to be here today,” the politician said.
The President of Germany stressed that he bows his head in deep mourning and at the same time feels deep gratitude for reconciliation.
“Reconciliation is not something that can be demanded. It can only be donated. I am all the more grateful for the close partnership that unites our countries today. I am all the more grateful for the common foundations we have discussed together: international law and human dignity, the freedom of peoples in their political self-determination and territorial integrity, a peaceful and secure Europe, ”said the policy.
