The exhibition “Arkadenale. Has something to say about Europe” has opened
The exhibition “arkadenale. I have something to say about Europe ”with a greeting from City Councilor Roland Hefter (SPD / Volt parliamentary group) on behalf of Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter.
Also there: Leonie sings
Bittersweet, melancholy songs, performed with a lascivious, smoky timbre – the band “Leonie Singt” takes their listeners into a musical world that moves stylistically between folk, indie and chansons. The dark, charismatic voice of the front woman Leonie Felle carries you through the German-English song world in a gripping and touching way. She is accompanied by three talented musicians who know what they are doing: Hagen Keller on guitar and accordion, Jakob Egenrieder on double bass and Sascha Schwegler on drums.
Since 2015, a topic-specific exhibition – arkadenale – has taken place in the Kunstarkaden every two years. This year everything revolves around the topic of the European Union.
As a forum for artistic experiments, as a platform for contemporary art, as a place for projects designed in dialogue, the Kunstarkaden promote young artists from different cultures living in Munich in group exhibitions. The works are staged and presented in interaction with the spatial senses of the art arcades. The art arcades support with publications about the respective exhibitions, so that artists also die and ensure a lasting impression.
Do you have something to say about Europe?
According to Greek legend, Zeus, who had turned into a bull, kidnapped a Phoenician princess to the island of Crete. There she gave birth to three children and the continent they lived on was named: Europe.
Often when “Europe” is mentioned, it is actually about the “European Union”. This fact already suggests that this topic is highly complex. A structure that is not exactly easy to grasp arises from political and economic interests.
After the Second World War, several states formed an alliance that has expanded over the years. The main goals were to maintain peace and promote the economy. The European Union was founded with the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Today the EU has 27 member states. Human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights are values on which the EU is founded.
But what is the EU for you? From your artistic perspective?
For the exhibition I have something to say about Europe 13 artists were invited to the art arcades to artistically implement their thoughts and ideas on this topic.
Participating artists:
Jovana Banjac, Pierre-Yves Delannoy, Emanuel Fanslau, Antoni Hidalgo, Ieva Jakusonoka,
Vasilis Karvounis, Anna Kiiskinen, Andrea Kozuchova, Silvia Marcantoni Taddei & Massimo Sannelli, Vincent Mitzev, Marios Pavlou and Sangam Sharma
1
Vincent Mitzev makes direct reference to the title of the exhibition with his work. He has no answer to the question, rather asks this himself, lets it affect him and maybe even questions: I have something to say!
2 and 11
Pierre-Yves Delannoy Has collected over 200 images of “European places” from more than 20 countries, which he was able to find on Google Earth. Without the buildings in these places, taken out of context, the images embroidered on a large-format European flag result in a new map – Trouve ta place!
3, 4, 5 and 6
Illustrated with a series of prints Anna Kiiskinen Europe as a place of longing: as a place where it is safe to live, where there is hope for a decent life. But for many people on the run, this place remains just a dream. Because the European Union has not yet succeeded in making safe escape routes possible.

The hand-made vase with the inscription If life is so beautiful, why does it still hurt? deliberately has an “imperfect” shape. Ieva Jakušonoka I want to underline the idea that the beautiful “housing of Europe” lives and breathes, something that can also rot inside. It is man-made, it can be shaped and changed.

In Sangam Sharmas Essay film Another Europe associative thought spaces are created. It is reflected on the connection between place and identity. How does personal history connect with geography? Longing for the distance, being on a journey and arriving (at home and with yourself) occupy the artist.

An original etching of Europe from the 19th century with 27 different ropes. Tool installation YOU, ROPES! from Silvia Marcantoni Taddei and Massimo Sannelli is an allegory: bonds and relationships to a common element, but also a living, powerful and difficult to classify tangle.

Jovana Banjacs Video work shows the rear view of a Superman figure standing in the wind near Gibraltar. save me is a metaphor of universal helplessness, on all sides and on all continents. At the same time, the title must also be understood as an invitation: to stand up consistently and without exception for the fundamental values of the EU.

A man is standing in front of a tunnel, but he cannot go through it. Maybe it’s the door to another place? But he remains on the other side, delimited. It leaves its traces on the wall, heated by the sun, they quickly disappear. Antoni Hidalgo With his work I love Europe shows metaphorically existing boundaries.
13
In their work there is Andrea Kozuchova With the help of fonts and typographies, power relations, religions and right-wing populist tendencies and languages of the EU are restored. SHE works with individual stories and developments, scripts run through and with them emotions.

With Disarmed by three huge pink pebbles told Marios Pavlou a story, a contemporary version of the Three Graces. It pays homage to three graceful figures of contemporary Greek queer culture. By listening to the stories of queer local legends from different countries, we can educate ourselves and raise awareness of LGBTQ + rights.

The Athens-based artist Vasilis Korvounis In his video work deals with the financial crisis and its dramatic effects on the population. With Give me some rain, give me some sunshine he offers a solution to the problem with a utopian act. It is also an attempt to talk about things that are beyond human capabilities within a sociopolitical system.

Emanuel Fanslaus Light object Europe represents real national flags, which are reinterpreted and ironicized by changing colors and dissolving them. Soft color changes create a rhythmic play between real flags and free compositions, between political statements and concrete abstraction.
