The City of Toulouse has used ferrets to control the rat population in the city center. A natural method
The method is ancestral and natural. In order to control the rat population in the city center, the municipality of Toulouse recently helped other small rodents: ferrets. Indeed, the animal hunts rats, which allows them to be extracted from underground galleries.
The experiment took place on the banks of the Brienne canal, located in the city center. “We have ratified a well-delimited plot where there are rat galleries, this using four ferrets”, indicated in Toulouse, Françoise Ampoulange, in charge of the delegation of the town animal at the town hall of Toulouse
In a quarter of an hour, a dozen rodents were flushed out thanks to the tamed ferrets. The rats were locked in black boxes “to avoid stress” and then gently euthanized by the introduction of carbon dioxide.
According to 20 minutes, this type of operation costs at least 1,500 euros per day, “but a rat trap already costs 800”, explains Françoise Ampoulange to our colleagues. Convinced by testing, she is ready for the experiment “in a flat place, probably in a square”.
This initiative is not new. This method was, for example, already used in La Rochelle, last April.
