From 7 p.m., Tuesday October 5, 2021, the delivery menUber eats and of Deliveroo are called to “stop ordering digital platforms” at Toulouse, like everywhere in France.
A demonstration in the streets of Toulouse
In the Pink City, where they had already mobilized last spring, it was the CGT union of “uberized Toulouse delivery men” who asked them to “Suspend orders”.
At 7 p.m., a rally is planned in front of the Jean-Jaurès metro station, before a demonstration.
“For the first time, we also appeal to the population. We ask the people of Toulouse to join us in denouncing the precariousness suffered by delivery people ”, prop Yohan Taillandier, general secretary of the union. According to him, “uberization is winning over all of society”, and it is the source of “flagrant backsliding in labor law”.
What the delivery people are asking for
In several cities of France, the “uberized delivery men” are participating this Tuesday in a national action, as part of a day of inter-union and inter-professional action. These delivery men, who denounce “A drop in their salaries for several months “, also intends to mobilize for” the increase in the price of orders, the end of competition between delivery people, the end of account blocking by platforms “. Other grievances also negotiated: “The right to paid leave”, but access to social protection in the event of accident or illness ”.
According to the trade unionist, Uber eats and Deliveroo, the two main platforms in the sector, would now have together 1,000 to 1,200 delivery people in the Pink City, ie “much more than a few years ago”. And according to Yohan Taillandier, this development had the consequence of pulling wages down: “Two years ago, a delivery man in Toulouse was before Urssaf contributions (at 22%), at 14 or 15 euros an hour, now , it is 8 euros. He navigates between the poverty line and the minimum wage ”.
The undocumented delivery men are in the majority ”
The union is also demanding “The regulation of undocumented deliverers”, who are “more and more numerous” in the city, and who are certainly much less demanding to assert their rights, assures Yohann Taillandier. “Two or three years ago, there were less than a third of undocumented delivery people, I think they are in the majority today. The cycling enthusiasts are gone, there is hardly any more than them ”.
For these undocumented workers who “manage to sublet accounts with platforms”, it is “Of modern-day slavery”, he said. And to estimate: “The precariousness of the delivery men is such that it is impossible to continue. Only those who are in extreme poverty do it ”.
Not convinced either by the example of Just Eat
In addition to better working conditions, this union is also fighting “against the end of the status of auto-entrepreneur” and the passage of these deliverers under the employee regime. For Yohann Taillandier, who evokes a sling wind which is currently rising in front of the Prud’hommes everywhere in France, “the link of subordination between the delivery person and the platform is clear. Or, if there is subordination, there must be wage labor ”. The company Deliveroo France and three of its former directors have just been sent back to correctional for covert work. They will be judged in March 2022 in Paris.
Paid on the run, these delivery men do not benefit from social security coverage, unlike those of other platforms such as JustEat, which has changed its model and placed all its delivery men on permanent contracts. But according to Yohan Taillandier, despite appearances, hopes around Just Eat were quickly showered and even “turned into a nightmare” for these new employees: “In Toulouse, 30 to 40 of the 130 delivery men hired were simultaneously fired the day before the end of their trial period. And then, their working conditions are dire. If this is the wage system, that raises questions… ”.
