Genoa. The notes of the piano, electronic music and via Garibaldi illuminated by twilight to accompany the experience of visiting the Palaces of the Rolli. And then a streaming DJ set with Joe T Vannelli, with house music among the noble residences.
This edition of the Rolli Days, started today with the start of the Rolli shipping week, will culminate in the weekend, with the openings of over 30 between palaces, villas and monumental sites.
In this context, the Municipality of Genoa has foreseen a rich program of collateral events for a party that for the first time, since the Rolli have become UNESCO heritage, lasts a whole week.

Rolli Plays… for the Rolli Days
Rolli Plays is the name of the project that will animate via Garibaldi on the occasion of the Rolli Days of the weekend.
Starting from Friday 8 October – and then on the evenings of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 – via Garibaldi and the facades of the historic buildings will be illuminated with special effects that will create suggestions and surprises.
Strada Nuova will then host live performances of classical-contemporary and electronic music.
It begins Friday 8 October with the inaugural concert by pianist Lilia Yakushin who will play music by Chopin, Ravel and Liszt in front of Palazzo Tursi while the lighting show of the buildings will be staged.
Saturday 9 October the concerts will start at 12 and will accompany the visitors of the Rolli Days. In the courtyard of Palazzo Tursi, young artists alternate with the piano who will perform a stimulating repertoire composed of music by Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Ravel, Liszt. A 6-hour marathon will be held in front of Palazzo Rosso for a single piano artist. Lucia Lo, from 12 to 18 will be the protagonist of Piano Continuum (Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Satie). And then at the beginning of via Garibaldi, towards piazza Fontane Marose, “Open Piano” from 12 to 18: all Genoese and tourists can try their hand at a special accompaniment of the Rolli Days. A piano will be available to anyone who wants to play.
It closes at 8 pm in front of Palazzo Tursi with the show by Bruno Bavota – piano, acoustic guitar & live electronics.
Sunday 10 October replicates itself. The same formula in the atrium of Palazzo Tursi starting at 12 noon. The 6-hour marathon in front of Palazzo Rosso will be entrusted to Silvia Zoe Cirillo (Scarlatti musician, Debussy) while the evening show (Palazzo Tursi, 8 pm) will feature Francesco Tristano (piano and live electronics). The Open Piano is also planned between via Garibaldi and piazza Fontane Marose (12-18 hours)
Rolli Days, all the news
In addition to the full opening week, there are other news to embellish this autumn edition of the Rolli Days 2021.
It will be possible to visit Palazzo Squarciafico for the first time, which had been opened “remotely” on the occasion of the May 2020 edition, digitally organized due to the health emergency. This time the Genoese and tourists will be able to admire its precious frescoes with scenes from classical mythology. One of the most interesting features of the Squarciafico palace is the painted facade, built in the 16th century by Ottavio Semino. Genoa in the 16th century was a city full of colors and the painted facades characterized its urban layout. Today, unfortunately, few have survived: that of Palazzo Squarciafico – with the depiction on the top floor of the Rape of the Sabine Women – so impressed the painter Giulio Cesare Procaccini (who stayed for a long time in Genoa) that he thought it had even been painted by Raffaello.
Another exceptional novelty will be the splendid Palazzo Sinibaldo Fieschi which overlooks Piazza San Lorenzo with its extraordinary halls frescoed by Domenico Piola and Sebastiano Galeotti. Here the mythological scenes and allegorical figures are flanked by perspective compositions that expand the space in daring late Baroque constructions, the highest expression of early century painting. XVIII in Genoa.
The visit to Villa Centurione Musso Piantelli in Marassi will also be intriguing for the public. Once the Bisagno plain was a holiday resort with important convents and villas surrounded by greenery. One of these was precisely the grandiose Villa Centurione which, with its double loggia layout, blended harmoniously into the landscape, which is now profoundly changed. The land that belonged to the villa was sold to build the Luigi Ferraris stadium in Marassi, which after the transformation into a modern stadium has practically hidden the structure, making it invisible to most. The villa is the opposite of Villa Cattaneo Imperiale di Terralba – also open for this edition of the Rolli Days – which houses a valuable fresco by Luca Cambiaso. Here, however, it will be possible to admire one of the most beautiful works by Bernardo Castello with the depiction of the events of Aeneas: a version of the myth, in fact, claims that it was the hero who founded Genoa with his Trojan exiles.
The “Rolli Days” also return to the delegations with the opening in Sampierdarena of Villa Centurione del Monastero (atrium) and Villa Pallavicino, Villa Imperiale Scassi “La Bellezza”, and Villa Spinola di San Pietro, in Voltri di Villa Duchessa di Galliera, and in Cornigliano of Villa Gentile Bickley and Villa Domenico Serra. The idea is to extend this enhancement work to the entire Genoese territory as much as possible. At Villa Duchessa di Galliera, the painting by Bernardo Strozzi recently rediscovered thanks to the art historian Piero Boccardo will be visible to the public for the first time. It is a Madonna of the great Genoese seventeenth-century master, which for many years had remained in a closet and which was restored thanks to the Opera Pia Brignole Sale with the contribution of the Amici di Villa Duchessa, who financially supported the expenses.
Come in each edition the “story” of the extraordinary events of families and magnificent buildings where a entrusted to informative young people – more than 60 – will be issued, professionals under 40 who have participated in a selection and are trained ad hoc. They will be the exceptional “mediators” between the public and the extraordinary heritage that can be visited, from the palaces of via Garibaldi to those of via Balbi and the historic center, from Palazzo San Giorgio to the villas of Cornigliano and Voltri.
Alongside the visits organized by the disseminators, three thematic itineraries dedicated to some buildings will be available, led by qualified tourist guides, curated by Explora Genova.
In addition, guided tours for people with disabilities will be available on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10.
Booking for visits is mandatory and can be made by connecting to the website www.visitgenoa.it/rollidays-online/
