Top times in Geneva: Gezahegne sets a world record
Kibiwott Kandie was sixth among the fastest men over ten kilometers in Geneva, while Kalkidan Gezahegne even improved the world record.
Kalkidan Gezahegne is the new world record holder over the 10 km distance. Two months after the runner who started in Bahrain had won silver over the 10,000 m course at the Olympic Games, she broke the global best time on the road in Geneva. The 30-year-old, who comes from Ethiopia, won with 29:38 minutes, clearly ahead of the Kenyan Agnes Tirop, who finished at 30:20. Celliphine Chespol (Kenya) came third in 30:28.
The previous 10k world record holder was Joyciline Jepkosgei, who ran 29:43 minutes four years ago. While the Kenyan ran the biggest victory of her career at the London Marathon on Sunday, she lost her 10 km record to Kalkidan Gezahegne.
Half marathon world record holder runs the sixth fastest 10 km time
There was also a very fast race for the men in Geneva. Here the half marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie prevailed with 26:51 minutes. The Kenyan ran the sixth fastest time ever over 10 km. His compatriot Felix Kipkoech achieved second top-class finish at 26:57 and was eighth in the list of the fastest times. Third was Boniface Kibiwott, another Kenyan who finished at 27:13.
Margaret Kipkemboi runs 29:50 minutes in Valencia
There were also top-class results at a 10 km race in Valencia. In Spain it was also women who came to the fore. Margaret Kipkemboi won with a world class time of 29:50 and is now the fourth fastest female runner of all time. The Kenyan won ahead of her compatriot Norah Jeruto. The world class runner over 3,000 m obstacle also achieved a top time with 30:08. Sandrafelis Tuei completed the all-Kenyan podium in third with 30:45.
There was a Norwegian winner for the men in Valencia: Zerei Kbrom, who comes from Eritrea, won in the national record time of 27:39 minutes ahead of the Kenyans Collins Koros (27:41) and Ronald Kirui (27:56).
