Has been updated:Stockholm (AP) – A Swedish apartment tenant who was shaken by an explosion and fire last month and injured 16 people was officially arrested on Monday on suspicion of attempted murder, arson and general destruction.
This move allows prosecutors to issue an international search warrant, but it is not certain that the man is abroad.
Swedish officials have not named a man in his 50s who is suspected of causing the explosion and subsequent fire. He has not been arrested.
Early on September 28, a powerful explosion destroyed the residential area of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. Subsequent flames spread to several apartments and evacuated hundreds of residents. Four of the injured were in serious condition and at least 140 apartments were damaged.
Swedish radio quoted a named neighbor and said that the suspect “had a lot of chemicals in either the apartment or the basement, considering the smell.”
According to Aftonbladet, property owners tried to drive a man and mother out of an apartment in the building. Some Swedish media said that evictions were planned on the day of the explosion.
Aftonbladet said that the police had already accused the man of several crimes a week before the explosion. The newspaper also reported that the suspect had harassed several people, including the owner of the building, after being denied permission to see his mother at a nursing home due to pandemic restrictions.
