Irish men Under 19-year-old coach Tom Mohan has selected 23 players for a friendly double jump against Sweden in Marbella, including nine players who are in line to earn their first internationals with the side.
John Joe Patrick Finn Benoa, Aidemo Emakhu, Cristiano Fitzgerald, Oisin Gallagher, Cian Hayes, Johnny Kenny, Jevon Mills, Josh Seary and Harry Vaughan are ready to go green for the first time.
Mohan takes his squad to southern Spain as he prepares for next month’s UEFA U19 qualifiers in Bulgaria – Bulgaria, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro are all in Ireland’s squad.
The Boys in Green will meet Sweden MU19 on Friday 8 October and again on Monday 11 October.
Friday’s game will be 689 days since Tom Mohan was last on the side for an international match, a qualifier against Austria in November 2019.
Speaking about the almost two-year wait to return to action, Mohan said: “We are really looking forward to returning to matches.
“The squad we have chosen is the culmination of hard work from our MU19 staff and FAI scouts in Ireland and the UK who have covered many matches. This has made it possible for us to monitor and judge a large group of players during assessment days and training camps in Ireland and England before we chose the squad for these friendly matches against Sweden.
“It’s so good to finally get clarity that games can continue. We are happy to have a squad again after preparing for so long and without a doubt Sweden will be a tough opponent. They are a strong well-organized site with quality attacking players who will give us a test and that’s what we want.
“I’m sure there will be a good advantage in the games because the players will be fighting for places in the European qualifiers.”
