Tom Jobim and João Gilberto honored in show with absolute debut in Portugal | Song
It’s called Enough of homesickness and it is a show that celebrates the genesis of bossa nova, paying homage to the art of Tom Jobim (1927-1994) and João Gilberto (1931-2019). It was scheduled for May 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic, which has now started in five Portuguese theaters and made an absolute debut. There was only one change, derived from the rescheduling: singer Roberta Sá replaces Maria Rita, announced for 2020, alongside four top musicians: Daniel Jobim (Tom’s grandson, on piano and arranger), Paulo Jobim (son of Tom, on guitar), Jaques Morelenbaum (cello) and Paulo Braga (percussion).
The first show is this Monday, at the Cine-Teatro de Estarreja, at 9.30 pm, followed by Casa da Música, in Porto (6th, 9 pm), the Aula Magna, in Lisbon (8th, 9 pm), the Arts and Entertainment Center of Figueira da Foz (9th, 9:00 pm) and the Teatro Baltazar Dias, in Funchal (10th, 9:00 pm).
Roberta Sá relaunched the album this year Sambas and bossas, recorded in 2004, but with restricted circulation and no distribution in the commercial circuit. Among the themes recorded on this disc is, precisely, Enough of missing, by Tom and Vinicius. Last June, Roberta did a live session, in streaming, to mark the 90th birthday of João Gilberto (who had died a year earlier), celebrated days later, on June 10th.
Paulo Jobim, Jaques and Paulo Braga were part of the Banda Nova that accompanied Tom Jobim, but all of them (including Roberta and Daniel) have already performed several times in Portugal, some at the concert that Tom Jobim gave in Lisbon, at the Jerónimos Monastery, in 11 of September 1992, but also in the years that followed, in various formations, such as the Jobim Trio and the Jobim-Morelenbaum Quartet, or a solo (cases of Jaques and Roberta Sá). The four musicians, together (Daniel, Paulo, Jaques and Paulo Braga), participated in the album Carminho Sings Tom Jobim and in the shows where the record was presented.
Another show with Daniel Jobim, also announced for 2020 and postponed, is the one that unites him, on stage, with Seu Jorge, also around his grandfather’s music. entitles itself Seu Jorge and Daniel Jobim sing Tom Jobim and is announced for 2022, already on two stages: the Super Bock Arena, Pavilhão Rosa Mota, in Porto, on the 9th of July; and, on the following day, July 10, at Jardins do Marquês, in Oeiras, at the Festival Jardins do Marquês, with the project Rua da Pretas (driven by Pierre Aderne) in the first part.
