Several hundred people protest in Brussels for regularization of undocumented migrants – Belgium
Several hundred people marched through Brussels on Sunday to demand regularization for undocumented migrants in Belgium, based on clear and sustainable criteria. According to the Brussels police, there were 1,600 protests. Until the manifestation was open by the undocumented migrants of Belgium, Sans Papiers TV and their partners, as part of their campaign “We are Belgium too”.
“We have been fighting for more than 6 years without ever getting any response from the policymakers for migration,” say the initiators of the demonstration. ‘We have a petition on March 10, which has already been signed by 45,251 Belgians. That is how many Belgians express their support for the regularization of the hundreds of undocumented migrants who have lived in Belgium for many years printing.’
The COVID period has only made the neglect and upheaval of undocumented migrants worse. Although, according to the demonstrators, it is after the pandemic and the clearly needed information to be left behind. Collective solidarity and economic revival go hand in hand. The Belgian government must review its migration and asylum policy. There is a need for a policy where undocumented migrants have the opportunity to praise themselves and participate fully in our society.’ ‘It concerns 150,000 people who live in secret in Belgium, without rights,’ says Stefan Nieuwinckel of Pax Christi Vlaanderen.
‘All together they form the second largest city in this country. Add to that great people who support and help them, who give them shelter, care, and food, and you have a city like Ghent. Today all those people are coming out to stand up for their rights.’ According to the director of Pax Christi, there is a need for a clear regularization procedure, which is applied objectively by an independent commission chaired by a magistrate. ‘How Belgium deals with undocumented migrants is a problem for human rights and democracy’, says Stefan Nieuwinckel. ‘The ‘sans-papiers’ are part of the solution, the government must enter into a dialogue with them.’ The demonstration went from the Brussels North Station to the Albertinaplein and went without incident.
