Portugal seeks to win first title against Argentina
The Portuguese futsal team is currently seeking to join the world title with the European one and stand out even more in the history of the sport, facing Argentina, the current holder of the current one, in the final of the competition.
European champions in 2018, in Slovenia, the ‘quinas’ team will face the Argentine team from 20:00 (18:00 in Lisbon), at Zalgiris Arena, in Kaunas, in the deciding game of the 2021 Futsal World Cup, which has been held in Lithuania since September 12th.
Having achieved the best performance ever, surpassing the third place in the 2000 edition, in Guatemala, the ‘quinas’ team is now seeking to win the first world title, after overcoming, in extra time and penalties, their counterparts in Serbia, Spain and Kazakhstan, in the knockout phase.
Leader of Group C with seven points, the result of victories over Thailand (4-1) and the Solomon Islands (7-1) and a draw with Morocco (3-3), Portugal passed Serbia (4-3) and Spain ( 4-2), in the ’round of 16′ and ‘fourth’, respectively, with difficulty, like the Kazakhs, in the semi-finals, where it was necessary to go to penalties (4-3, after 2-2 in extra time).
The last hurdle is Argentina, who, following an unprecedented title in 2016 in Colombia, now have the opportunity to retain their scepter, after winning Group F with nine points, beating the United States (11-0) , Serbia (4-2) and Iran (2-1).
In the knockout phase, the ‘albiceleste’ team overcame Paraguay, by 6-1, in the round of 16, the Russian Football Union (RFU), by 5-4, on penalties, after 1-1 without extra time, in the quarter-finals, and Brazil, 2-1, in the semi-finals.
In the history of matches, Portugal beat the Argentines once, by 2-1, in the 2010 Grand Prix, adding a draw, in the 2001 Mundialito (2-2), and three defeats: in the III FIFA International Tournament, in 1987 (4-3), in the 2004 World Cup group stage in Taiwan (1-0), and in the semi-finals of the last World Cup in 2016 in Colombia (5-2).
Before, Brazil and Kazakhstan, defeated in the ‘half’, face each other in the starting match for third and fourth places, at 18:00 (16:00 in Lisbon), in the same arena.
