Portugal’s first world title was made up of some suffering and a lot of merit, enshrining a team that always showed a strong, solid and consistent block, from the first to the last minute of the final. In the confrontation with the title holder on arrival in Lithuania, a more experienced Argentina and deserving the label of favorite in the game of all decisions, a team from the corners took a serene approach, until they realized they could rule the match.
An idea accentuated by Borruto’s expulsion, after just nine minutes – inadmissible his attitude, when he punched Ricardinho in the stomach -, a move that caused natural imbalances by leaving the opponent with one man less on the court. Situation well taken advantage of by the national team, with Pany, in an inspirational move, putting down two opposing defenders with a simulation before signing a violent and indefensible shot to Sarmiento, in the 15th minute.
On the return of the half-time, which came with a fair advantage for our colors, a note of balance was maintained, with danger lurking in both areas. And it was from a corner that Portugal began to see an unprecedented title more closely: Ricardinho superior the spherical out of the area and Pany, in another blessed action, hit the ball squarely before it hit the ground, giving him the zip code of the South American beacon.
But the Argentine response arrived in the same minute, the 28th. Claudino’s showy slalom looking for room for a powerful shot, not giving Bebé a chance to defend himself. He who, from this point onwards, began to balance the dialogue between the goalkeepers, until then dominated by Sarmiento, taking into account the greater work he had been subjected to.
The Portuguese heart stopped in the 36th minute, when the elements used the VAR’s images to analyze a hand on the ball by João Matos inside the area. To the relief of some and the despair of others, no penalty was ordered.
With four minutes to go, Argentina risked everything and bet on the forward goalkeeper. There, Portugal had to be even more united and supportive to cover all the paths to their goal: a difficult mission but ended with a wide smile on their face, after a ball kicked by Rescia for taking paint off the post… at the last .
