It was a rather improbable evening that the public at the Ornano stadium experienced, this Saturday, October 2, 2021. Largely dominant in the first period, the Malherbistes were nevertheless led 2-0 by Valenciennes at the break. The visitors then mastered the debates, sometimes under a downpour, despite the reduction in Chahiri’s score in stoppage time (1-2).

The Caennais can blame themselves as long as they offered gifts to their evening opponents. Abdi was the most generous in opening the scoring with a chest handover. It was intended for Riou, she finally lobbed the Caen porter. “Us, something always happens to us,” grumbled Stéphane Moulin before the trip to Toulouse. That, no one had seen it coming (0-1, 16 ′).

An incredible ineffective first half

At that time, Caen had yet taken the measure of the debates after a few complicated initial minutes which had seen Riou intervene with authority (8 ′). Led, the Malherbistes reacted quickly and the first half became a real attack-defense where Chahiri showed everything how dangerous and ineffective he could be. Despite all his attempts, nothing came in in the first period (25 ′, 32 ′, 35 ′, 36 ′).

His partners were not more successful, especially Mendy after an excellent service in the depth of… Chahiri (26 ′). In the incredible highlight of the heart of the first act, there was also a Rivierez header (33 ′), an Armougom bar on a center (34 ′), a Deminguet center close to being cut (37 ) …

A fatal counter

The problem is that in the middle of it all, we also saw a counter-attack converted by Robail after a ball lost by Wadja in the middle (0-2, 29 ′). Obviously, that changed a lot of things …

In the second half, the Malherbistes took a long time before regaining the energy they had previously deployed. Valenciennes came close to 3-0 (54 ′, 56 ′, 58 ′) and Caen took about twenty minutes to straighten his head. Under a downpour, hope seemed to have left the Normans.

Chahiri, what opportunities before scoring!

Chahiri returned to coal and we wondered how a player could have so many chances without converting a single one (69 ′). Shamal, Hountondji and Deminguet were not more precise (70 ′, 70 ′, 82 ′). Finally, after Riou saved his team from a bigger defeat, Chahiri ended up setting the sights too late to change the game.

Caen had room to do much better in this frustrating match. The Calvadosiens confirm their inconstancy, not the victory in Toulouse.
