Lugo-San Marino had its baptism on 7 September 1958. It was run that first year (and for a few more editions) also as the “Gino Mazzolani Trophy” in memory of an athlete from Lughese della Baracca who died prematurely. The route was 102 kilometers. The arrival was positioned about 50 meters before today’s one, at the top of Mount Titano, at the head of the 8.5 kilometers of the climb the final. At the first edition there were thirty-five participants, but their number grew quickly and stabilized at the same value as today, or about 200 subscribers every year. The State Tourist Office of the Republic of San Marino, since 1962, has made available a large gold medal for the winner of the race. The race was born from an idea of the then president of the cycling company “Francesco Baracca”, Lorenzo Berardi, to whom it is now dedicated.

In 2020 the winner of the autumn classic was Mattio Pietro of the Vigorcyling Team who in the sprint preceded the Bracalente Diego Scap of the Trodica di Morrovalle.

“We are proud – declares the Councilor for Sport of the municipality of Lugo Pasquale Montalti – that a race of this caliber, which for many years has involved some of the best talents in Italy, starts again from Lugo. I thank the cycling club “Francesco Baracca”, the numerous sponsors and volunteers who allow the perfect success of the competition “.

The initiative is organized by the “Francesco Baracca” Cycling Society of Lugo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Lugo, the Union of Municipalities of Lower Romagna and the Secretariat of State for Education and Sport of the Republic of San Marino, with the collaboration of the Federation San Marino cycling. The tender takes place with the support of the sponsoring companies (Bcc Credito Cooperativo Ravenna Forlì and Imola, Banca di San Marino spa, Ente Cassa di Faetano and Conad).
