Killed with a punch in a bar by an 18 year old in Rome. “That man was out of his mind, my son defended himself”

Sugar Mizzy October 2, 2021

“My son would never make anyone a boy, he’s a good guy who works 12 hours a day. I am destroyed for him and for that man who is no longer there. I keep thinking about his family, it’s a tragedy ». Mehmut is a desperate dad and behind his words there is a life spent between sacrifice and work. Together with his 18-year-old son he runs the Bosphorus from via Tiburtina for about a year. But yesterday morning at dawn, when the fight with the client escalated, he wasn’t there. He was at home with his son at the counter for the night shift: «Some friends called me who have another place not far from ours – says Mahmut – I ran as soon as I heard. First to the club and then to the police station. My son is scared now and so am I. I don’t know what will happen, he’s really a good boy – he still says defending Engie – it was a disgrace ».

Drunk customer in a shop in Rome: the owner’s 18-year-old son beats and kills him

Throughout the day, the 18-year-old was heard in the district offices Saint Lawrence where he reconstructed what happened in the room. A story also confirmed by the testimonies, the customers who were present at the time of the then degenerated dispute. He is now accused of manslaughter and the judge has ordered house arrest. According to what was gathered by the investigators, the account of the testimonies would confirm that of the attacker. Even though, according to father Mehmut, the victim attacked him armed with a shard of a bottle: «Once he arrived at the restaurant, the police were already there, all the people in front of the place. Then I saw my son, taken away by the agents. They told me that the man had been there all evening drinking, that he was out of control. When Engie told him to go away he went into a rage, had a shard of a bottle and attacked him. My son just defended himself, he didn’t want to kill anyone. It was a disgrace, ”Father Mehmut repeats more and more desperately.
THE CHOC
Less than five hundred meters from the Bosphorus, there is another diner with Middle Eastern specialties. They are friends and relatives of Mehmut and Engie. Yesterday morning they regularly open them but in constant contact with and son. “We are all shocked, we can not really understand how this misfortune could have happened” say the owners on the basis of a Mehmut contract to be updated. The air is tense: “We are really very worried, we want to help them but we don’t know how.”

THE DISTRICT
Meanwhile, the anger of the shopkeepers in via Tiburtina mounts, especially those around the kebab where the tragedy took place. “At the park in front of it, everything happens at night,” says one of the mechanics of Auto Officina Ferri, the business adjacent to the place where the tragedy took place. He points to the San Lorenzo Fallen Park and explains: «The guys who work next door are good and serious. Unfortunately, however, as soon as night falls, everything happens. Homeless, tipsy and delinquent kids often spend the night out here. We too had some problems, the same was the market across the street ».
Some customers, among the most loyal ones and who know Engie’s family best, looked out in the morning at the shop in via Tiburtina: “I came as soon as I realized it was them” says Francesca Carrera, resident of San Lorenzo : «I’ve been a loyal customer for months and I really can’t believe it happened to them. They are two good people, but everything happens here at night. That boy didn’t even realize what was happening and that the situation was already serious ».
