Zurich’s first airport in the world with “Live View” – TOP ONLINE
Finding a gate, check-in or a specific café at Zurich Airport should now become much easier: Google has activated the “Live View” feature on Google Maps at Zurich Airport. This emerges from a statement published on Thursday.
This makes Zurich the first airport ever to have this function. With a camera and direct directions on the camera image, passengers are visited and the desired locations at the airport are navigated.
«Augmented Reality» view
The aim of the “Live View” function of Google Maps is to find the way even better through so-called “Augmented Reality”. Flughafen Zürich AG and Google Switzerland started this joint intention as a project in mid-2018 to improve intuitive navigation “from curb to gate”.
Recordings of the interior of the airport as well as the outer areas of the circle were made, which are now used when using the Google Maps “Indoor Live View” function. When using Google Maps “Live View”, these recordings are continuously compared in the background with the camera images of the user in order to be able to show you the correct route in an “Augmented Reality” view.
To use Google Maps “Live View”, when users just open the Google Maps app, enter the destination and select the “Live View” symbol, which resembles a compass needle. The phone’s camera is then opened and the route and important information are displayed directly in camera mode.
Valuable help
For passengers who are often not familiar with the area and also speak a foreign language, this is a valuable help in getting around Zurich Airport, says Stefan Gross, Chief Commercial Officer of Flughafen Zürich AG.
New Google Maps navigation functions are already being planned at Zurich Airport for 2022.
