Ivan Konovalov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, on the air of Komsomolskaya Pravda radio named an increase in the number of detected cases of coronavirus in Russia is the tip of the iceberg. According to him, mortality rates depend on methods of assessment and calculation, because of which they can change.
“It sounds, probably, cynical and not very human, but life is such that it has always been, and in dockyard times. The cause of death is often based on very complex criteria, ”said Konovalov.
He recalled that this year, updated recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor were issued on how to register cases of diseases, including how to calculate mortality. The doctor of the deceased explained that a person can be disconnected from both coronavirus infection and complications associated with the disease. Besides, Konovalov, the apparent reasons may differ from the real one. For example, a person who is hospitalized with a coronavirus infection may die from other causes.
According to the expert, changes in the methodology on the basis of which statistics appear are also visible in the percentage of asymptomatic patients. He noted that 1-1.5 years ago there were about half of such patients. “This means identifying cases of coronavirus mainly among people who have certain clinical signs, symptoms of the disease,” the doctor explained.
The doctor acknowledges that the delta has been driving a much higher transmission of the virus since late spring 2021. At the same time, the rate of spread of the infection and its severity increased.
Earlier, the chief physician of the Leader-Medicine medical center, pediatric infectious disease specialist Yevgeny Timakov warned that the new wave of the coronavirus pandemic would be the most difficult for Russians. According to the doctor, the situation will stabilize only by mid-September. Timakov suggests that the next waves will be easier to tolerate, as Russians will be less likely to get sick with severe covid.
