João Rendeiro’s wife is in Portugal
Portuguese authorities will issue a second international arrest warrant against João Rendeiro. The former banker is in a country that does not have a cooperation agreement with Portugal, but the courts are hoping for extradition based on international treaties and conventions.
João Rendeiro’s wife is in Portugal. SIC captured images this Friday at the former banker’s mansion, in Quinta Patino, in Cascais, at the time he was being approached by the Alcabideche GNR.
The whereabouts of João Rendeiro is not yet certain, but whatever the new country he hid in, police sources – contacted by SIC – believe in the fugitive’s repatriation. Adding up all the sentences, the former banker was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
An eventual extradition, in a country without an agreement, depends on a judge of the Superior Court of the State where he is located. and also some diplomacy and reciprocity. Under international cooperation mechanisms, a Portuguese justice may request the respective detention with a view to repatriation.
The first arrest warrant was issued this Wednesday and the second is for hours. This new order concerns the conviction, already final and unappealable, to five years and eight months of imprisonment for computer forgery and document forgery crimes.
João Rendeiro already planned the escape since august. Lawyer Carlos do Paulo said, in an interview given this Wednesday, that he was the new defender of the former banker, but the power of attorney – to which SIC had access – had already been signed on August 25th. José António Barreiros and Joana Fonseca Independently renounces the defense of the former banker.
O Newspaper advances that Rendeiro is in Belize, a country on the east coast of central America, from which the registration of online access to the personal blog was detected – where he published the text stating that he would not return to Portugal.
