Innsbruck Airport received a special award as a long-term EMAS partner on September 27, 2021 as part of the annual environmental management award.

On behalf of the Austrian Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, Christian Holzer, Head of the Environment and Circular Economy Section at the BMK, presented the representatives of Innsbruck Airport with a certificate with the appointment of “EMAS pioneer” for the more than 20 years of use and implementation of the European environmental management system EMAS.

“We are very happy about the award, but we are not resting on our laurels,” said Airport Managing Director Marco Pernetta about the renewed award and announced: “The next major project in the field of sustainability is the introduction of emissions-based landing fees from 2023 on the plan.”

EMAS stands for Eco-Management and Audit-Scheme and has existed for over 25 years. EMAS-certified companies make an effective contribution to environmental protection, save costs and bear a high level of social responsibility. EMAS ensures that all environmental aspects are implemented in a legally secure and transparent manner. Innsbruck Airport was the first airport in Austria to introduce the EMAS system back in 2001. Many environmental measures have since been implemented and documented accordingly. In 2007, 2013 and 2018, the airport received special EMAS awards at national level for its environmental team, its innovative environmental management and its environmental statement.
