Beijing recalls its attachment to Luxembourg
Do not look for a CovidCheck checkpoint or a glass of friendship: this year the celebration of the 72e anniversary of the People’s Republic of China was held by videoconference, hosted from the Chinese Embassy in Luxembourg.
Between a video on the major dates of relations between the two countries and one dedicated to the involvement of members of the Chinese Communist Party for their country, HE Yang Xiaorong gave a speech on Tuesday in front of around 80 people.
“I am delighted to see that Sino-Luxembourg relations have not only withstood the challenge of the epidemic and have shown strong resilience and a great prospect for development,” said the Ambassador who has been in post for a year. And to cite the jump of nearly 60% in the volume of import and export between the two countries, which reached 210 million dollars last year.
Among the other figures given by the embassy, note the milestone of 800,000 tonnes of goods transported last August on the Cargolux air route between China and Luxembourg. In addition, Beijing claims to have sent 2.5 million yuan of sanitary equipment to the Grand Duchy, the equivalent of 330,000 euros.

The Chinese recipe for vaccination
It is impossible not to mention the Covid-19 pandemic, the first reports of which evoke the Middle Empire. “China is participating in research and global cooperation to research the origins of Covid-19 and has twice invited WHO experts to come and study in China,” said its representative.
A WHO team was able to travel to China last February, a month after the cancellation of the mission in question, filed for Visa problems. During the month-long stay, the researchers spent two weeks in quarantine before they were able to visit, along with Chinese scientists, the Wuhan market and the city’s institute of virology. Their report released in March 2021 reported few responses, even prompting the WHO to reverse a statement that “a laboratory leak is highly unlikely.”
In mid-September, Beijing announced that it had vaccinated 70% of its population against Covid-19 but the effectiveness of the sera is subject to questions, in the absence of international studies on the subject. China has chosen to develop its messenger RNA vaccines while banning formulas developed abroad on its soil.
Three Luxembourg representatives
Note that the President of the Chamber of Deputies Fernand Etgen (DP), the Deputy Prime Minister François Bausch (déi Gréng) and the Minister of Finance Pierre Gramegna (DP) also took part in the virtual reception through a video message.
Luxembourg has 4,000 Chinese nationals in its population, a contingent that has more than doubled in ten years. The country has seven Chinese banks as well as many Chinese companies or companies owned by capital from the Middle Empire. In 2020, China raised on the 11e country both for the import of goods into Luxembourg (with a part of 1.3%) and for the export with a part of around 1.7%.
