AS Monaco wishes a happy birthday to “Mister” George Weah
AS Monaco wishes an excellent birthday to the former Rouge et Blanc striker, crowned Ballon d’Or in 1995 and now President of Liberia, who turns 55.
To date, he is the only Ballon d’Or in history to have played for AS Monaco. One can even say that it is the club of the Principality which accompanied him towards glory, since he started his career in Europe at the foot of the Rock in 1988. While the Red and White won the 5th title of French champion in the club’s history, Arsène Wenger brings in the young Liberian striker (22), from Tonnerre Yaoundé in Cameroon. The Alsatian coach thus trusts his friend Claude Leroy, then coach of the Indomitable Lions.

A Fire Attack with Mark Hateley and Glenn Hoddle
This recruitment turns out to be quite quickly a very good pick, since George Weah scored in his first season in Division 1, the ancestor of Ligue 1, 14 goals in just 23 games. Associated at the time with the Englishman Mark Hateley at the forefront of the Monegasque attack, he took advantage of the balls distilled by the other British team, Glenn Hoddle, to torturer the defenses of the French championship. The Liberian international (61 caps, 22 goals), thus participates in keeping AS Monaco on the elite podium in 1989 and 1990 while living a first of European epics until the semi-final of the Cups Cup.
But it is especially in 1991 that the team draws the quintessence of its potential. The players of Arsène Wenger will thus win a Coupe de France by winning the final against Olympique de Marseille (1-0) by Bernard Tapie, to erase the place of dolphin of the Marseille club in the league. The following season, the dream team even climbed to the Cup final, the then C2, against Werder Bremen. With a defeat on arrival, despite a superb generation of rising stars.
More than 130 matches with the Rouge et Blanc for the 1995 Ballon d’Or
George Weah, who has just completed his most prolific season in Division 1 with 18 but registered in 34 games, decides to fly to Paris Saint-Germain. With the capital club, he won a new French championship in 1994, before winning the two national cups in 1995, but especially the Ballon d’Or title that same year, just after his transfer to the great AC Milan. In all, “Mister” George will have played 149 games with AS Monaco (66 goals), his “first love”, as he likes to repeat. Speed, explosiveness, skill… he had everything of a great modern striker in his time.
The entire Club therefore wishes a very happy birthday to his former glory, current President of Liberia, who is celebrating his 55th birthday today. Happy Birthday Sir !
