(UPM, Helsinki, 30 September 2021, 14:15 EEST) – UPM has permanently discontinued paper production at its Shotton newsprint mill in North Wales, UK. The site and all related assets will be transferred to Eren Paper Ltd, a subsidiary of Modern Karton Sanayi Ve Ticaret A.Ş. The deal was announced in May 2021. Eren is now starting to convert the site.
The Renewable Energy Plant, Materials Recovery and Recycling Facility (MRRF) will continue to operate throughout the conversion process, as announced by Eren, which is commensurate with their role in regional infrastructure.
UPM Shotton was founded in 1983 and has been producing newsprint. In recent years, the production capacity was 260,000 tons per year. The paper mill currently directly employs 183 people and an additional 231 people in the material recovery and recycling plant and other maintenance operations.
UPM Communication Papers remains committed to the UK and provides its customers with a full range of newspaper, magazine and fine paper grades. UPM will also continue to source recycled paper from the UK.
“The closure of newsprint production at UPM Shotton marks the end of a very successful chapter in the history of UPM Communication Papers in the United Kingdom. I want to thank our colleagues for their dedicated and professional work over the past decades. The strong support of local authorities has been critical to Shotton’s success, as has the loyalty of our customers, ”says Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President, UPM Communication Papers.
“That’s why I’m very pleased that the upcoming change to the plant will provide a very positive long-term perspective for Shotton residents and the entire area. Transparent and reliable cooperation with Eren in recent months is a very solid foundation for this future development. It is important to emphasize that UPM Communication Papers will continue to be a strong paper supplier in the UK, ”Schaur continues.
